Rail Transit Engineering Group

ITE’s Rail Transit Engineering Group is headed by a 30-year rail veteran, and has expanded rapidly. Our past projects range from the conceptual layout of New Jersey Transit’s diesel fleet, to the preparation of technical and economic studies for New York City’s massive Hunt’s Point Produce Market, to the inspection and rehabilitation of MTA/LIRR bridge structures.

New Jersey Transit/STV - Hoboken Rail Yard, Hoboken, NJ

New Jersey Transit wanted to optimize train storage capacity, and construct new shops/facilities for train inspection, sanding and fueling, wheel truing, car washing, parking, an electric substation, and new rail bridges. To accomplish all of that, they turned to the RTEG, who performed a study and conceptual yard layout. A subconsultant to STV, ITE’s Rail Transit Engineering Group played a pivotal role in the 30% design completion of track work for Yard B, including track-alignment plans, profiles, and cross sections. For special track work, the project team specified standard AREA turnouts and crossovers.

NYC Economic Development Corp - Hunts Point Rail Yard TOFC, Bronx, NY

ITE served as the prime consultant in preparing an economic and technical feasibility study, preliminary and final design, and construction management for the Intermodal Terminal at the Hunts Point Produce Market—the largest produce market in North America—in the Bronx. With Trailer on Flat Car (TOFC) train service located within the terminal area, the $10 million project included documentation of current demand for such a service, documentation of current and prospective supply alternatives, analysis to produce projected volumes and economic benefits, an operational and technical feasibility study to bring TOFC trains directly into the Hunts Point Rail Yard, and finally conclusions and recommendations. So good was the study, in fact, that the client opted to construct the actual facility recommended in the study.

The project also included replacement of old tracks with new track and prestressed ties, new track drainage, replacement of old pavement, installation of two grade crossings (including signals/gates), and ancillary site development/landscaping work.
